Inclusion

At Woodthorpe Church of England Primary School, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. Guided by our vision, “Learning and growing together to be the best we can be,” we celebrate the uniqueness of every child and ensure that all pupils—regardless of background, need, or circumstance—are valued, supported, and able to thrive.

We are proud of our caring, nurturing, and highly inclusive ethos. Our commitment to inclusion is reflected in our daily practice, our curriculum, our relationships, and our belief that every child can succeed with the right support.

Our Inclusive Approach

  • We know our children well. Staff identify pupils’ needs quickly and accurately, including disadvantaged pupils, those with SEND, pupils known to social care, and those who face barriers to learning.

  • We provide the right support at the right time. Through a clear graduated response, personalised adaptations, specialist advice, and targeted interventions—including ELSA, Play Therapy, P4YP, Forest School, Zones of Regulation and academic interventions—we remove barriers to participation, progress, and wellbeing.

  • We are a relational school. Our Relational Behaviour Approach promotes strong, respectful relationships, emotional safety, and a calm environment where pupils feel heard, understood, and supported. This leads to reduced incidents, improved self-regulation, and high levels of engagement in learning.

  • We maintain high expectations for every learner. We believe that all children have the right to achieve well. We set ambitious targets, use adaptive teaching, and closely monitor progress to ensure that pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils keep up and catch up.

  • We value attendance as essential for success. We work in partnership with families to reduce persistent absence—particularly for disadvantaged and SEND pupils—using compassionate, multi-tiered support systems rooted in understanding and trust.

Our curriculum is ambitious, evidence-informed, and carefully adapted to ensure all children can access it. We prioritise:

  • Strong foundations in language, communication, reading, writing, and early learning—areas where disadvantaged and SEND pupils often need additional support.
  • Oracy development, giving every child a voice and the confidence to express themselves.
  • Adaptive teaching and high-quality instruction, ensuring lessons meet diverse needs.
  • Spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development, encouraging empathy, respect, and understanding of others.

Working Together With Families and Professionals

We believe inclusion is a partnership.
We work closely with:

  • Parents and carers
  • The Inclusion Support Advisory Service
  • The Virtual School (for children previously or currently looked after)
  • Health and social care professionals
  • DDAT networks and local schools

These collaborations ensure that every child receives wraparound support that meets their academic, emotional, and social needs.

Belonging, Safety and Flourishing

Above all, Woodthorpe is a place where children feel:

  • safe
  • welcomed
  • understood
  • supported
  • inspired

Our Christian values, relational culture, and belief in each child’s potential create an environment where pupils not only learn but flourish.
